Spontaneous Combustion Ignites California Wildfire

Firefighters said a brush fire that forced about 100 East County residents to evacuate started spontaneously inside a compost pile. Images: Fire Blamed On Spontaneous Combustion The fire broke out shortly after noon on Sunday near Camino San Ignacio and Camino Moro in Warner Springs. It threatened at least 20 homes Sunday, but fire crews prevented damage to all but two houses. Residents were evacuated to Warner Springs High School. In all, 378 firefighters -- including crews from the U.S. Forest Service -- battled the blaze, backed by 15 engines, two bulldozers, five helicopters and one air tanker, officials said. By Monday morning, the fire had blackened 122 acres and crews had it 75 percent contained. Fire officials said they hoped to have it completely encircled by early afternoon.
