The incident happened at a farm home on Cranberry Road near York Springs. The homeowners were not home at the time of the explosion.
Fire investigators think an electrical problem might have sparked the blaze. The fire then spread through the house and might have set off propane canisters that were stored in a garage.
"I didn't do anything different today than I have any other day," said homeowner Roy Leader.
The house sustained major damage.
"(It's) probably a total loss," said firefighter Dean Green. "The garage is gone and there is damage to the home first and second floor."
