The cleanup continued Wednesday morning after a gasoline tanker caught fire in Louisville late Tuesday night.
According to firefighters, the driver of the truck had finished up a delivery to a gas station at the intersection of Seventh Street and Algonquin Parkway when he left the station without disconnecting the truck's hoses.
Investigators said the truck kept driving away, dumping gallons of fuel. When the tanker finally stopped, fumes caught fire, destroying the truck and sparking several fires that spanned for nearly two miles.
You can hardly see the truck, witness Nikia Brown said. There was just a lot of fire and a lot of smoke.
Firefighters were able to put out the flames in a matter of minutes, and no injuries were reported.
I have never seen anything like this before, Louisville firefighter Tom Carroll said. I have seen tankers that have leaked fuel before, but not one that covered this great a distance.
Despite a strong odor of gasoline, firefighters said the spill does not pose a health risk.
