California News Anchor Dies In Home Fire

When firefighters arrived, their first action was to pull Doug Murphy from the home.

Veteran Bay Area news anchor Doug Murphy was found dead in his LaFayette home Sunday night by firefighters called to the house to battle a smoky attic blaze.

Authorities said neighbors called 911 when they saw heavy smoke coming from the house at about 7:30 p.m. Several neighbors attempted to rescue Murphy before firefighters arrived, but could not because of the heavy smoke.

When firefighters did arrive, their first action was to pull Murphy, 53, from the home and then fight the blaze that was quickly extinguished.

Murphy was at KPIX for more than 20 years, but recently had taken a leave of absence. Cause of the fire remained under investigation.
