NEW YORK (AP) -- A man died after apparently jumping or falling from a burning building near Times Square, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released but who was believed to be in his 40s, was found dead Friday night outside the building at 351 West 44th Street, police and fire officials said.

The medical examiner's office would determine the official cause of death, said Detective Noel Waters, a police department spokesman.

The fire broke out shortly before 9 p.m. and was under control about half an hour later. One firefighter suffered minor injuries but no one else was reported hurt, the fire department said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
