MOBILE, Ala. (AP) -- A 19-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in an apartment fire that caused critical burn injuries to his girlfriend.
Kendric Hamilton of Mobile was arrested and charged Thursday in the attack on Deanna Stoutamire, 18, who was engulfed in flames when she ran from her apartment Saturday afternoon. She remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Eric Gallichant, a Police Department spokesman, said he would not release further details because the case remained under investigation.
Jodie Brown of Harker Heights, Texas, who was visiting his mother, said he saw Stoutamire run from her public housing apartment with flames covering her hair, face, arms and legs. Brown said he told the woman to lie down, then ripped off his coat and used it to put out the fire.
``She kept saying, `Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming?' I said, `Baby, I wish you were,''' Brown said
