NEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A fire destroyed a barn at a farm owned by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, killing 22 animals, authorities said.

The barn was destroyed Sunday but firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby maintenance shed, New Buffalo Township Clerk Judy Zabicki said.

No people were injured in the fire and the cause was under investigation. Some people were at the southwestern Michigan farm when the fire started but Zabicki didn't know whether Farrakhan was among them.

An Associated Press reporter seeking comment from Nation of Islam headquarters in Chicago was directed to contact Final Call, the organization's weekly newspaper. A telephone message left with the paper's editorial department was not returned.
