TORONTO (AP) -- A freight train derailed while crossing a bridge and plunged into a ravine before erupting in flames, officials said Thursday. Its two crew members were missing and feared dead.

The crash happened Wednesday in a remote area 430 miles northeast of Vancouver near the Alberta border.

CN Rail spokesman Jim Feeny said the train was traveling on the company's northern line from Prince George to Winnipeg when it derailed on a bridge.

Fire crews assisted by a helicopter spent the night fighting the fire in the isolated area, and by early Thursday it had been extinguished, he said.

Feeny said the search was continuing for the engineer and brakeman who were onboard the train, but they were not expected to have survived the crash.
