A nonprofit group that sought to collect donations to save eight city firehouses folded its operations yesterday, less than two weeks before the city can officially close down the companies.
"Keep NYC's Firehouses Open," shut down because "of the mayor's opposition to accepting private donations to finance firehouses," said its founder, Adam Brecht. The group will return about $1.5 million in donations, Brecht said.
