JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- A strong earthquake shook parts of central Indonesia on Tuesday, injuring at least 20 people and damaging several houses, officials said.

The magnitude 5.3 earthquake was centered in the Flores Sea, which is between the islands of Flores and Sulawesi, said Budi Waluyo of the National Earthquake Center.

Anton Bagul Dagur, chief of Manggarai district, said 20 people were injured, some of them critically, in Reo, a town on the northern coast of Flores Island.

He said several houses, a port and a bus terminal in Reo, 1,000 miles east of Jakarta, were damaged.

The quake was also felt 170 miles away in the cities of Makassar on Sulawesi island and Kupang in West Timor. There were no immediate reports of damage on those islands.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the so-called Pacific ``Ring of Fire.'' In 1992, a devastating 7 magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people on Flores.
