SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- A Banning man was killed Wednesday evening in a three-vehicle crash involving a Cal Fire truck on the eastbound 210 Freeway near Del Rosa Road, California Highway Patrol officials said.
"Right now we're trying to determine the sequence of events that led up to the fatal crash," said CHP Officer Mario Lopez.
As of 7 p.m., it was still unclear if the driver of the Cal Fire Silverado pickup truck rear-ended the red Ford Focus, sending it into a silver Chevrolet Impala, or if 48-year-old Gregory Kirwin, the driver of the Focus, struck the Impala and was then hit by the Cal Fire truck, Lopez said.
Kirwin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials first received a number of 9-1-1 calls a little after 5 p.m., Lopez said.
When CHP and fire rescue personnel arrived, the Ford Focus was pinned up against the center guardrail by the Cal Fire truck. The Impala was blocking the Del Rosa Road off-ramp. The force of the impact spun the Impala and it was nearly facing the wrong way.
"Both the drivers of the Impala and the Silverado truck suffered only minor injuries," Lopez said.
Authorities shut down two lanes of the freeway to allow officials to investigate the crash.
Traffic on the freeway had backed up for more than a mile Wednesday night.
