Lt. Michael Daley will be presenting several programs at Firehouse Expo in Baltimore next month. He'll be presenting "Tactical Considerations for Attic and Cockloft Fires?" and "Rapid Intervention Safety and Survival?." He'll be teaming up with Ryan Pennington to present "Communications Between the Front Seat and the Jump Seat?" in the Speaker Showcase.
What will attendees to your program walk away with?
With a variety of topics I will cover this year, from rapid intervention to officer development and strategy and tactics, I hope the attendees bring back some extra tools for their technical "tool boxes" that they can draw from at the incident. Many of our topics are based on tried-and-true skills that have been sharpened to maximum efficiency. It's up to them to learn from any program and properly place that tool in the tool box.
What is the story behind your class?
For the attic and cockloft class, we had a significant issue in the past with fires in these spaces. We had to alter our tactics to address these issues and I'm going to share some lessons from those incidents. I developed the front seat to jump seat program with Ryan Pennington to address communications as an on-going learning experience in our business. Ryan and I have found some common issues that exist on both sides and we believe we have some true solutions to the glaring common communication issues in our departments. We do not spend enough time training on true battleground skills for rapid intervention operations and this class was based on those shortcomings. In 90 minutes I will cover some simple, but effective skills that all firefighters should know.
Tell us about your time in the fire service.
I am a 27-year student of the fire service. I have served as a chief in multiple volunteer departments and am currently a career lieutenant and training officer for my department. I am also a rescue officer with NJ-TF1, serving as a field instructor with the team as well. I am the founder and owner of Fire Service Performance Concepts, a consultant corporation that assists departments with their training needs.
