Multiple fire departments responded to a fire on U.S. 33 in Elkhart Saturday morning, the Elkhart County 911 Center said.
The fire was reported at about 6:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, in Dunlap Plaza, located in the 23000 block of U.S. 33, an emergency dispatcher with the center said.
Though it was unclear which businesses were damaged in the fire as of 9:14 a.m., there was serious damage to the ones on the south side of the plaza, including one business structure that appeared to be completely destroyed.
Concord Township Fire Department Chief Scott Maurer said the fire spread through the roof and firefighters had to trench cut to stop it. They were still working to put out hot spots as of 9:30 a.m., he said. A fire investigator was on the scene, but as of 9:30 a.m., it was too early to tell what started the fire, Maurer said.
No one was injured in the fire, Maurer said.
Harrison Township Fire Department, Elkhart Township Fire Department, Concord Township Fire Department, Goshen Fire Department, Baugo Township Fire Department, Jefferson Township Fire Department, Osolo Township Fire Department, Wakarusa Township Fire Department and Foraker Fire Department responded to the blaze, according to dispatch.
We will continue updating this story as we learn more.
