Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) today announced $129,145 in federal funds for the Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department from the Department of Homeland Security.

With recent reports indicating that homeland security efforts are dangerously underfunded, it is critical that our fire departments continue to receive grants like this one," said Lowey. "Local fiscal crises have resulted in budget cuts for many fire departments at a time when homeland security needs continue to rise. This grant will help the Village of Mamaroneck train and equip its fire fighters to protect our community."

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) Grants to Firefighters Program, administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), awards grants directly to fire departments. Funds may be used to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, new fire apparatus, Emergency Medical Service programs, and Fire Prevention and Safety Programs. Last year, $14.6 million was allocated to New York State fire departments, and Congress has more than doubled the funds available for the program this year. The agency plans to award a total of $750 million to local fire departments nationally through May 2004.

According to Fire Chief Michael Kopy, the Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department plans to use the homeland security funds to purchase state-of-the-art communications equipment, which is a necessity with newer construction in the community.

"We are pleased our efforts have resulted in this funding being granted," said Kopy. "Acquisition of these radios will enhance our ability to operate and protect the residents of the Village of Mamaroneck."

"This grant is yet another example of how we can protect our communities by working together on the local and federal levels," said Lowey. "I will continue fighting to obtain funds for local first responders through fire grants and other federal programs."
