Veteran Firefighter Is New Chief of Fire Operations in Detroit

David Nelson, who has been with the department for 33 years, was named fire chief Friday.

David Nelson was named fire chief on Friday, the department announced on Facebook. 

Nelson has served with Detroit Fire Department for 33 years.

He is replacing Chief Percy Allen III, who announced his retirement last week.

Allen served with the department for 35 years, starting April 24, 1989. He wrote in an announcement, he plans to "enjoy being home, enjoy doing some traveling and...work on my golf," WXYZ reported.
