Cincinnati has named Dallas Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief Frank McKinley to wear the white helmet.
McKinley said he wants to be a beacon of light in the community.
He was selected out of 40 applicants to lead the department, replacing Chief Michael Washington who was fired in March over allegations of hostile workplace culture, WLWT reported.
McKinley told firefighters, citizens and officials at a press conference Tuesday: "This is something that I don't take likely and I look forward to making sure that the men and women of the department get every resource that they need and deliver the highest level of customer service to the citizens of Cincinnati."
He added: "Cincinnati Fire Department is an incredible fire department, a very well-respected, there is nothing wrong with Cincinnati Fire Department. There are things that we're going to correct and improve on."
The new chief will be visiting fire stations to meet the women and men.
McKinley has a bachelor's in business, a Masters in emergency and disaster management as well as a Doctorate in Education.
