AL Chief Charged with Stealing from Department

Jan. 25, 2024
Libertyville Chief Jared Watson is accused of misappropriating funds on several occasions.

"Volunteer fire fighters are vital assets to our community and bad decisions of one should not shade over the hard work and unselfishness of others."

That's what Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman had to say after his deputies arrested Libertyville Fire Chief Jared Watson for stealing funds from the fire department.

Watson was charged with one count of theft of property in the first-degree, WDNH reported.

The probe started last month Libertyville's board of directors found several “discrepancies” on bank statements.

Investigators determined Chief Watson had “misappropriated and/or stole money” from his department on several occasions, the sheriff said.

There is no word on Watson's status in the department.
