North Carolina Firefighter Collapses, Dies

Salem Volunteer Firefighter Greg Cooke suffered an apparent fatal heart attack while operating at a woods fire late last week.

NASH COUNTY, N.C. -- Salem Volunteer Firefighter Greg Cooke suffered an apparent fatal heart attack while operating at a woods fire late last week, according to the Web site FireNews.net.

Nash County Emergency Management confirmed to FireNews.net that Cooke, 60, was transported to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, N.C. and pronounced dead on March 21.

Cooke was a twelve year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a twenty year veteran of Salem Volunteer Fire Department. He served as the department's secretary and was a member of Unit 18-6.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Horton and husband, John of Creedmoor and grandchildren, John Cameron and Connor Jackson Horton.

Funeral Arrangements

Visitation for Firefighter Cooke will be held Wednesday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Ave. Rocky Mount, N.C.

A graveside service will be held at Thursday, March 26 at 2 p.m. at Rocky Mount Memorial Park in Rocky Mount, N.C.
