Firefighter/Driver Garrett Paiz, 38, was driving an empty 1993 Kenworth tanker when it left the roadway around 6:45 a.m. in Napa.
The tanker left the roadway on a curve and crashed through a guardrail and down a ravine, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Paiz died at the scene, officials said.
He was working on a water resupply run for crews battling the Nuns fire near Oakville when the crash occurred.
