Michael Galay with Green Knoll Fire Rescue in Bridgewater was found unresponsive at home Thursday following a call the previous day.

A veteran volunteer firefighter in north-central New Jersey has died following a call the previous day.

The U.S. Fire Administration on Monday announced the line-of-duty death of firefighter Michael Galay, who was a member of Green Knoll Fire Rescue in the Somerset County community of Bridgewater Township.

According to the USFA, Galay responded to a call of smoke and a fire alarm activation last Wednesday before returning from the incident and assisting crews at Station 1 with the arrival of a new engine company.

Galay then went home and was found unresponsive by his wife the next morning. CPR was administered and he was transported to a nearby hospital where he died a short time later.

The 71-year-old firefighter had dedicated 30 years to the fire service.
