Burlington Fire Protection District Sgt. John "Andy" Andrew Kuchar III died following surgery after he injured his elbow while performing duties at his station.

A Kentucky firefighter died Thursday after surgery for an on-duty injury he suffered at the station, the U.S. Fire Administration announced.

Burlington Fire Protection District Sgt. John "Andy" Andrew Kuchar III, 43, was injured March 2 performing duties at his station, the USFA stated in an alert Monday. Following surgery for the injury, he died at his home in Hebron.

The nature of the injury and his cause of death hasn't been determined, according to the USFA. Burlington Assistant Chief Rob Butcher told the Cincinnati Enquirer that Kuchar injured his elbow lifting equipment, and Boone County Coroner Missy Rittinger said that while an autopsy was completed, the cause and manner of death needed more investigation.

Kuchar served with the district for 13 years, the department stated in an online post. After serving with the U.S. Navy, he joined as a volunteer in April 2009 and was hired full-time in June 2012.
