DE Fire Police Officer Dies after Being Struck

Laura Madara, a Fire Police officer and member of the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Department, died after being struck by a vehicle while assisting at a crash scene Friday.

A public safety officer in Delaware has died after being struck by a vehicle while assisting at the scene of a previous crash.

The Selbyville Volunteer Fire Department announced in a Facebook post that Fire Police Officer Laura Madara, 56, had succumbed to injuries she sustained Friday afternoon while working at an accident scene.

According to a report by WRDE, a crash scene was being cleared along Polly Branch Road in Selbyville when the driver of a Fire Police vehicle used for traffic control reversed the pickup and accidentally struck Madara.

She was rushed to the hospital, where she died from her injuries a short time later, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Along with being a member of the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Department, Madara was the president of Ladies Auxiliary. She also was the site supervisor for the  Ocean City My 50plus Center in Ocean City, MD.

"My heart is breaking tonight," Betty Brandell of Ocean City wrote in a Facebook post. "Laura Madara, the site manager for the Ocean City Senior Center and president of the Ladies Auxiliary and a Fire Police Officer for the Selbyville Fire Company, was killed in a tragic accident yesterday. Her contributions and service to this community was immense. She will be sorely missed by all those who knew her."
