An Illinois firefighter died on the way to a call Sunday.
Wabash Fire Protection District firefighter Mehdi Mourad, 21, was responding to a multiple vehicle crash along Interstate 57 shortly after 4:30 p.m., WAND-TV reports. That's when he lost control of his vehicle and rear-ended another vehicle that was parked on the side of the road because of the severe weather.
Firefighters extricated Mourad, who was trapped in his vehicle. He was taken to the hospital, and he died in surgery, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
A 54-year-old adult and a 12-year-old child in the other vehicle were injured in the accident. They were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.
A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help pay for Mourad's hospital and funeral expenses. According to the page, Mourad "was a college student that gave all his extra money to others that needed it."
