A former New York fire captain collapsed and died Sunday following a training session.
Island Park Firefighter Michael Fischer, 38, collapsed just after he arrived at the annual clam eating contest, according to reports.
"This is a dark day in our storied history," officials wrote on Island Park Fire Department Facebook page. "We thank the entire Nassau County Fire Service for their outpouring of support."
"He was a good firefighter, solid leader and better friend," Town of Hempstead Councilman Anthony D'Esposito told Patch. "He will be missed by our department and community."
D'Esposito was at Peter's Clam Bar along with Fischer and many other firefighters for their annual clam-eating charity event
Medics tried to revive Fischer for 25 minutes but could not regain a pulse, the paper reported.
