Firefighters in the Pilot Grove Fire Protection District are mourning the loss of their assistant chief.
After helping with a stubborn grass fire Monday afternoon, Assistant Chief Donald Kammerich, 64, returned home.
He was found unresponsive at his home hours later. Despite life-saving efforts from fellow firefighters, he was pronounced dead at his home that evening, the U.S. Fire Administration reported Wednesday.
Kammerich had been with the fire service for 35 years.
The Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Friday, March 14 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pilot Grove. Visitation will follow until 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
