A fire tore through the top floor of an apartment building on Palisade Avenue in Bogota on Sunday afternoon, leaving 41 people from 13 families displaced and sending one person to the hospital, authorities said.

The Bogota Fire Department responded to reports of smoke around 2 p.m. and found a fire in the space between the roof and ceiling of the top floor, officials said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within a few hours.

One person was taken to a hospital, but no firefighters suffered major injuries, officials said. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents with lodging, food, clothing and other necessities.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Bogota Fire Prevention Bureau, with assistance from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
