More than 40 people, many of them international students, were displaced in a massive fire in Paterson on Sunday that destroyed at least two buildings, authorities said.

The fire began around 5:30 p.m. in a stretch of multi-family homes in the 400 block of Totowa Avenue, according to Paterson fire officials.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from the city and neighboring towns brought the fire under control after a couple of hours, though dozens of people had been left homeless, officials said.

“Among those affected are international students who now have nowhere to go and are currently staying in a hotel,” Paterson Councilman-At-Large Md Forid Uddin said in a statement.

“As we continue to support them, they are in urgent need of winter clothing, blankets, and other essentials,” Uddin said.

Uddin said anyone who wishes to help with donations of new winter clothing, blankets or money, may call 973-582-8195.

The American Red Cross of New Jersey said that they were helping 42 people from 11 families to find temporary housing, food, clothing and other necessities.

The Red Cross said late Sunday they expect to assist seven more people from two families affected by the fire.
