June 20 -- WAYNE TOWNSHIP, OH -- A fire Tuesday destroyed two barns at a central Ohio hog farm, killing an estimated 5,000 pigs, according to reports.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Department tells ABC 6 that the fire was reported at about 1 p.m. at Straathoff Swine Farm.

WCMH Channel 4 reports the intense heat and smoke made it difficult for firefighters to get inside the barns. According to the Columbus Dispatch, one firefighter was treated at a hospital for an injured arm.

Firefighters from several departments and five counties responded to the blaze, which was not brought under control until 6 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Wayne Township is about 45 miles southwest of Columbus.
