A homeowner's son helped out Brockton firefighters by using 5-gallon buckets of swimming pool water to keep the flames from a kitchen blaze contained.

BROCKTON, MA—A resident sprang into action early Monday morning when a fire broke out in the kitchen of his home, using pool water to keep the flames from spreading further.

The Brockton Fire Department responded to a report of a building fire at 17 Elmwood Ave. about 1:41 a.m.

As firefighters were responding to the scene, the department received two additional calls from the homeowner, who reported there was active fire inside the house.

When firefighters arrived, they learned the residents had safely evacuated the home on their own. They were told there was a fire inside the kitchen.

Firefighters found a fire on the top of the stove, which had extended to the cabinets and ceiling. The kitchen has wood paneling on the walls.

Fire officials say the homeowner's son had extinguished the bulk of the fire by the time they arrived, using 5-gallon buckets of water from the swimming pool.

The eight adults who live in the home will be temporarily displaced. The Red Cross responded to assist the residents.

The house is valued at $381,800, including the land its on, according to city assessors records.
