An off-duty firefighter captured dramatic footage of Syracuse crews working to put out the vehicle fire as flames engulf the garage where the sports car was parked.

SYRACUSE, NYAn off-duty Syracuse firefighter caught dramatic video of flames shooting from the back of a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro in a West Newell Street garage.

The Syracuse Fire Department shared the video, which off duty Firefighter Maurice Gilbert took shortly after someone called 911 at 3:37 p.m. Saturday to report the car on fire in a garage.

The fire, at 240 W. Newell St., burned and badly damaged the Camaro, as well as the attached garage.

Firefighters quickly put out the car fire, but a man suffered minor injuries in the fire, firefighters said. The man was taken to a Syracuse hospital for evaluation, Syracuse Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Ellis said after the fire.

On Monday, a Syracuse fire investigator said the origin of the fire was the Camaro in the attached garage, although he was still investigating the cause of the fire. Lt. Joseph Fenell said he is so far “unable to eliminate a mechanical issue with the vehicle.”

The fire damaged the garage, though the fire didn’t spread to any other parts of the house, and those that live there were able to go back inside, Ellis said.
