More Than a Dozen FDs Battle Massive IL Warehouse Fire

A thick, black plume of smoke could be seen for miles as firefighters from East St. Louis, Camp Jackson, St. Louis and other departments responded to the large warehouse blaze in Sauget.

A massive plume of smoke was visible across the region after a warehouse caught fire Thursday afternoon.

The fire started shortly before 2 p.m. at a warehouse in the 1400 block of Mississippi Avenue, according to St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency Director Herb Simmons.

The property is adjacent to the Diamond Cabaret adult entertainment club. It is separated from the warehouse compound by a masonry wall roughly 10-feet tall.

“Several” fire departments responded, Simmons said. Firefighters from East St. Louis, Camp Jackson and Sauget fire departments were on the scene as of 3 p.m.

Apparatus form multiple departments arrived in the intervening hour, in addition to an ambulance. Praire DuPont and Columbia fire departments arrived at about 3:30, followed by two pumper trucks from the St. Louis Fire Department.

It was not immediately clear how the fire started.
