PEORIA, IL—On a night when seven people were shot, the Peoria Fire Department put out a garage fire early Saturday morning that caused $25,000 in damage.
The first was at 1319 W. Main St. and occurred at about 2:30 a.m., right about the time when a string of events began that left six people shot. A seventh had been shot early in the evening.
Battalion Chief Clint Kuhlman noted "the combination of emergency calls kept Peoria Firefighter/Paramedics busy while utilizing a large majority of our resources."
The fire call came in at 2:29 a.m. and the first firefighters on the scene found a two-stall garage fully engulfed in flames, the chief said.
A vehicle parked in the driveway also caught on fire, he said.
"Crews had to navigate several down power lines due to the fire. The garage and the vehicle were a total loss," Kuhlman said. "Crews were able to prevent fire from spreading to the nearby house."
The fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes. No one was injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
