GA Firefighter Injured in Fatal House Blaze

Flames had fully engulfed the home when Augusta firefighters arrived at the scene, and a body burned beyond recognition was discovered during a search of the structure.

A house fire Monday on Alden Drive killed one person and injured an Augusta firefighter.

According to a post on Augusta Fire & EMA's Twitter, firefighters responded to the fully engulfed structure fire at 9:45 a.m. Firefighters were able to contain the fire, though the building is severely damaged.

A body was later found inside the home located on the 1000 Block of Alden Drive. After finding the body, Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the Coroner's Office were called in to take over the investigation.

Coroner Mark Bowen said time of death was 11:30 a.m. The body was burned beyond recognition. It will be sent to Atlanta for autopsy and positive identification.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury.
