A Bethlehem firefighter suffered a back injury while battling a large fire that ripped through a vacant house that had been divided into apartments.

A Bethlehem firefighter suffered a back injury while battling a three-alarm blaze Saturday inside a Southside home that had been divided into apartments, Assistant Fire Chief Anthony Preletz said.

The fire was reported at 10:23 a.m. at 1165 E. Third St.

No one was living in the apartments, Preletz said.

The cause of the blaze and where it started were under investigation by the city’s fire marshal, who remained at the scene into the afternoon.

A three-alarm fire puts all of the city’s firetrucks into action, and off-duty personnel are called in to cover any additional calls, Preletz said.
