Nov. 18, 2021
Hardeeville firefighters found fire in a vehicle recycling pile after an explosion at an industrial center that officials say was felt more than a mile away.

Nov. 17—An explosion in the Hardeeville Industrial Park sent shockwaves through the city Tuesday afternoon, according to the Hardeeville Fire Department.

Crews responded to the scene to find heavy smoke and "fire conditions" in a vehicle recycling pile.

As the fire was being extinguished, an employee with the recycling company helped move the charred vehicles with heavy equipment, the department's Facebook post said. Jasper County Fire-Rescue also responded to the explosion.

The fire was ruled accidental.

Comments on the Facebook post said students at Royal Live Oaks Academy of the Arts and Sciences felt the explosion, and smoke was seen from John Smith Road.

The industrial park sits between U.S. 17 and Deerfield Road and has businesses that include recycling, construction and auto companies.
