An explosion that rocked a Flint neighborhood Monday night destroyed three homes and claimed the lives of a 3-year-old girl and 70-year-old man.

The Flint Fire Department was dispatched Monday night to a suspected gas explosion that destroyed three homes and caused two fatalities, including a little girl.

When firefighters arrived at around 9:30 p.m. they found large amounts of debris scattered in the area with multiple structures on fire.

FOX 2 Detroit reported on Tuesday afternoon that the remains of a missing three-year-old girl who was believed to be in the home at the time of the explosion had been found after the death of a 70-year-old man who lived next door had been confirmed earlier.

The mother of the toddler and her boyfriend were also in the house when the explosion happened. The mother was treated at a hospital and released, while the boyfriend was in critical condition with burns over 70 percent of his body.

"This is a tragic time for our community," Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said during a news conference.

Flint Township Fire Department assisted at the scene along with multiple law enforcement agencies and ambulance crews.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
