Mar. 8—A plane crashed Tuesday afternoon on approach to Centennial Airport, sending two people to a hospital.
The crash happened at about 2:20 p.m. on E-470 in the median, between Peoria and Jamaica streets, according to South Metro Fire Rescue. Two people on board were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
The downed plane let off a plume of black smoke as firefighters doused a fire. No vehicles on the highway were involved in the crash.
The plane — a Cessna P210N single engine, six-passenger aircraft — was flying northward when it went down just south of Centennial Airport, SMFR said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.
After the fire was out, hazardous materials units with SMFR and the Colorado State Patrol worked to safely drain fuel from the wrecked aircraft.
The northbound and southbound ramps from Interstate 25 to eastbound E-470 were shutdown because of the crash, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. E-470 was closed at Peoria Street. The highways reopened at about 6 p.m.
An investigation, including the National Transportation Safety Board, is looking into the cause of the crash.
