An apartment fire displaced 40 residents from a four-story building on the hills above Haight-Ashbury Monday night.
The two-alarm blaze broke out on the third floor shortly after 8:30 p.m. at 400 Upper Terrace. Two occupants and a cat had to be rescued while the others got out safely. It took an hour and a half to contain the blaze, which burned so intently that one firefighter had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of burns.
The rescued cat was taken to an emergency pet hospital.
The American Red Cross and the Human Services Agency both responded to the scene. The displaced residents were housed in two hotels following arrangements made by the building's property manager, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
The 21-unit building was yellow-tagged Monday night and may be upgraded to red tag, meaning it is uninhabitable.
"I can't remember a fire with this many displacements in my district, and many of them are seniors and longtime residents. It's a nightmare situation," said Supervisor Rafael Mandelman.
"We are trying to figure out what will happen to the building and how long those people will be displaced."
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
