A massive, two-alarm fire erupted late Friday morning at a plant in Ensley.
Birmingham and Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched at 11:40 a.m. to Performance Mineral Co. at 3450 Avenue B. The company works with dirt and synthetics to make a limestone product that is often used in the manufacturing of bathroom items such as tubs and showers.
As of 12:30 p.m., firefighters were still staging a block or so away as until they could learn more specifics about the chemicals inside and then devise a plan to best attack the blaze.
Firefighters described the situation as volatile because of the potentially explosive chemicals.
A dark plume of smoke could be seen from downtown Birmingham.
The plant was quickly evacuated, and no injuries have been reported. Residents closest to the plant are also being evacuated.
