Fire Destroys Fireworks Barge Off CT Coast

The Grucci fireworks show ended after the barge caught fire in Long Island sound and a fire boat was used to control the fire. .

Jul. 2—WESTPORT — Firefighters extinguished a blaze at the annual fireworks celebration Thursday night, officials said.

First responders were called to Compo Beach for a reported fire around 9:30 p.m. The fire started on the barge's deck used to launch fireworks at the Westport Police Athletic League's annual fireworks celebration, according to Fire Chief Michael Kronick.

No one, including the workers from Fireworks by Grucci, which put on the display, was injured. Kronick said there was also no property damage.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 11:25 p.m. The barge was able to return to Long Island to set up for another fireworks display planned for Friday night, according to Kronick.

Kronick said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
