FREDERICK, MD -- A man rescued from a house fire Tuesday evening by Frederick County firefighters.
The victim, who suffered critical injuries, was located quickly and brought out.
"He may have been trying to get out since they found him near the back door," said United Fire Company Deputy Chief Marc McNeal.
Paramedics and EMTs immediately initiated care and started IVs. Due to his condition and possible smoke inhalation, he was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.
The house that sits down a long gravel road wasn't visible from MD 144 or Bartonsville Road. Someone who saw smoke in the area went to check it out and discovered the house on fire, McNeal said.
"The fire was on the second floor and in the attic. Ammunition was going off too," he said, adding that no firefighters were injured during the operation.
"They made a quick stop. I think it was out in about 15 minutes. We didn't have to call for any additional resources."
Due to the high temerature, crews took off their gear as soon as they got out of the house.
One dog walked out of the house and was given oxygen. Later, he walked around interacting with crews. Another dog died.
The cause remains under investigation.
