Update 12:36 a.m.:
Firefighters are still trying to put out the fire at a Baldwinsville apartment complex.
When firefighters arrived around 9:41 p.m. at 1 Legacy Drive they found heavy fire and smoke showing, said Northwest Fire Chief Derek Natoli.
First responders quickly helped residents evacuate the building. One person was taken to a local hospital, he said.
At this time, firefighters can’t confirm if everyone got out of the apartments, Natoli said.
While attempting to put out the fire at the 3-story building, Natoli said, the roof partially collapsed, which made it harder to extinguish.
They have yet to determine why the fire was so widespread by the time firefighters arrived, he said.
Original story:
Baldwinsville, N.Y. — Firefighters are battling a large fire Friday night in a Baldwinsville apartment complex that’s caused the roof to collapse on at least one building.
The glow of the fire could be seen from a mile or more away. Smoke filled the sky.
One person had been taken to a hospital, a fire official said.
The fire was reported at 9:41 p.m. Friday at the New Legacy Apartments, 1 Legacy Drive. It is off Meigs Road, south of Downer Street.
The roof on part of the apartment complex has collapsed. Multiple apartments have been destroyed.
Firefighters were told to leave the building at 10:20 p.m. and are fighting the blaze from outside.
Multiple fire departments are fighting the fire at 11:30 p.m.
Firefighters are battling freezing conditions with the temperatures around 18 degrees.
Cindy Bartlett, 42, who lives near the complex, said they could see the fire from their home.
“We walked out the door and the sky was on fire basically,” she said.
She and her daughter ran down the street concerned for a friend who lives in the complex.
“We were afraid, everything was on fire,” she said. “There were flames everywhere.”
The flames slowly spread throughout the complex, said Liv Bartlett, Cindy Bartlett’s 18-year-old daughter.
The six-building apartment complex has 144 units, according to county records.
