Two people were injured Monday evening in a fire at a vacant Lakewood building, police said.

The site, which once housed a lumberyard, has been uninhabited for some time and the people who were injured were believed to be squatters, Lakewood Police Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith told NJ Advance Media.

They were both taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Staffordsmith said. The severity of the injuries was unclear.

The cause of the blaze was unknown, but as of 8 p.m., it was under control, officials said.

The commercial site, located at 133 Ocean Ave., covers just over three acres and is currently owned by Hampton Development, LLC, according to property records. The company could not immediately be reached. The site is currently for sale.
