An FDNY firefighter who was seriously hurt battling a fire in Manhatten last week walked out of the hospital Wednesday afternoon to applause and smiles.
Firefighter Christopher Zambrzycki of Engine 58 has been in Harlem hospital since he was injured last Friday, ABC 7 reported.
He was working a hose inside the building and was among the first firefighters looking for pockets of fire and trapped residents. Zambrzycki took a nasty fall while backing down the stairs.
"Stepped right into a window and then down about 40 feet of a shaft behind the building," said FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker.
Zambrzycki thanked his FDNY colleagues for getting him out of the situation so quickly. He went on to laud hospital staff for their help and care.
