Grandmother, 75, Passes Butte County, CA, Volunteer Firefighter Training
At 75, many are slowing down and curtailing activities.
Mary Jarschke isn't one of them.
She just finished the CAL Fire Butte County volunteer firefighter training academy.
"I keep thinking 'man if I started when I was 30 I would be' excuse the expression but badass. I mean it's still pretty badass at 75. But, really I wish I had done it sooner," she told an Action News Now reporter.
A retired registered nurse and Camp Fire survivor, she says she joined the program to continue to give back to the community.
She encourages others to give it a shot.
"Just try! I mean the support has been phenomenal. As I went along, I said I don't know if I was gonna make it through the program because it's pretty arduous. But I'd say I'm just gonna try. So every day I'd show up and say I'm gonna try. And, at the end of the day, I feel pretty proud of myself actually."
