Fire Thwarts Efforts of Cops, Neighbors to Save Elk Grove Village, IL, Woman

June 28, 2024
"Anytime there's someone injured or killed in a fire, it's very sad," said Elk Grove Village Fire Chief Richard Mikel.

Heavy fire thwarted efforts of police officers and neighbors to rescue a woman from an Elk Grove Village house fire.

“It was very intense. There was heavy volume of fire coming out the front windows. Police officers arrived first. They did try to make entry; they were not able to do so due to the heavy volume of fire and smoke," Fire Chief Richard Mikel told WGN.

After hitting the fire, firefighters went into the house, located and removed the woman.

Despite resuscitative efforts, Cindy Goodwin, 62, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

“(It is )Very sad. Anytime there’s someone injured or killed in a fire it’s very sad,” Mikel said.
