GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A fire that caused significant damage to a commercial building in Grand Rapids is under investigation as a possible arson case, police said.

The fire was reported around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2301 S. Division Ave., near Baylis Street SW. Firefighters found flames showing through windows, with heavy smoke billowing.

At some point, the roof started to collapse.

An evidence sample analysis by Michigan State Police concluded the blaze does not appear to be accidental, investigators said on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The case has been turned over to the Grand Rapids Police Department for further investigation.

One firefighter suffered a laceration on his arm fighting the fire. He received treatment and is back to duty.
