On Wednesday, March 30, 2005 a fire was reported around 6:30pm in a vacant five-story 75x400 stone mill located at 773 Main Street in West Warwick, Rhode Island.

The former Scott Lab Mill has been vacant for over 15 years. The fire department has responded to numerous small fires in that time, but this time companies arrived and reported heavy smoke and fire venting from the top floor. Within minutes, the building was fully involved and starting to collapse.

Fire companies from Warwick, Cranston, Providence & Coventry were called in to assist.

Hot brands from the old timbers caused concern as they landed on numerous other structures in the neighborhood. Two adjacent residential three-story dwelling were protected and companies contained the blaze in the mill structure around 11 p.m.

Companies remained on the scene all night pouring water on the structure and fighting pockets of fire in this turn of the century mill.
