St. Paul firefighters had their hands full with an early-morning fire in an house under renovation on Thursday.
Units were alerted to the fire in the 900 block of East Sixth Street at 12:17 a.m. Engines 4, 7 and 24, Ladder 7, Squad 1 and Chief 3 were assigned.
Units arrived to find heavy fire in a two-story dwelling and started an interior attack. Shortly after they made their way inside, Squad 1's crew encountered holes in the floor and advised they were pulling out.
Chief 3 called for a defensive attack and companies withdrew from the structure and fought the fire with handlines.
After the fire was knocked down, crews re-entered the structure to bring the fire under control. As crews worked on each level of the home, Ladder 7's crew made several cuts along the roof line to help access the hidden pockets of fire.
The fire was under control in about 40 minutes and units were placed in service about 4 a.m.
St. Paul Fire Investigator Jaime Novak said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and the damage was estimated at 107,000.
