On Dec. 13 at 6:08 p.m., Battleboro Fire Department, Nash County EMS and Stoney Creek Rescue units were dispatched to a single vehicle accident on Interstate 95 at mile marker 141 in Battleboro.
Battleboro Engine 9 was first to arrive and found one vehicle overturned against a concrete bridge piling and the crew was unable to access the patient due to heavy entrapment. The vehicle was tangled in guide wires. Soon after Stoney Creek Rescue arrived with Chief Dennis Williams along with Battleboro Fire Chief Ed Hardee. Chief Williams was in charge of the rescue operations and Chief Hardee was the incident commander.
Fire personnel pulled a 1 3/4-inch hoseline for protection line and assisted with extrication, patient removal and providing lights.
Once the vehicle was stabilized, they began to remove the passenger’s door since the side's of the vehicle was pinned against one of the bridge supports. They separated the door from the door pin and then used spreaders to pop the door hinges and remove the door. Then they had access to the driver compartment where they found a female that was unresponsive.
The patient was extricated from the vehicle and placed on a heart monitor by Nash EMS and pronounced dead.
Rescue members made a complete vehicle inside inspection for any another possible patients but no one else was found in the vehicle.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol asked if fire personnel would remain on scene during the investigation and removal of the vehicle.
The last fire unit cleared at 9:00 p.m.
